Information about the region

THE VARIED COUNTRYSIDE OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL LIMBURG HAS SOMETHING SPECIAL TO OFFER ALL YEAR ROUND

No less than three of the region’s nature reserves have been awarded National Park status, and each of them has its own distinct sense of character.

Enjoy the endless expanses of De Groote Peel, cycle through De Maasduinen, the Netherlands’ longest stretch of freshwater dunes, or explore the colourful heaths of De Meinweg.

The river Meuse meanders through the entire eastern part of the region, while the expansive Maasplassen lakes are located in central Limburg.

There's also plenty for culture-lovers to do in the area. Each town and village has something worth visiting: a castle, an old farmhouse, an unusual chapel or shrine, or a church with an interesting vault. And that's not to mention the wealth of museums – on the history of Roman times, the peat-diggers in De Peel, or a sense of village and farm life in bygone times. Meanwhile, northern and central Limburg has a considerable amount of modern art on offer too.
Many of the cycling, walking and horse-riding routes take you through the heart of characteristic towns and villages in the area. Stop off in one of the bustling villages on the Meuse for a cup of coffee and a slice of local Limburg 'vlaai' (flan) or to sample the delicious regional cuisine, stroll along one of the many shopping streets and revel in the famous Limburg hospitality.
