NETWORKS OF MARKED WALKING ROUTES IN NORTHERN AND CENTRAL LIMBURG

There are already many networks of marked walking routes in northern and central Limburg, and a number of new ones are currently being developed. You can already use the network intersections to devise your own walking routes in Sevenum (Municipality of Horst), Venray, Peel en Maas, Leudal, Bergen, Weert and Roerdalen.

How does the network of walking routes work?

The various walking routes are connected by means of so-called intersections. Upon reaching an intersection, walkers and hikers are free to choose which direction they wish to take next. This enables you to design your own route and decide for yourself how far you wish to walk.

You can choose to begin your route at any intersection or at a starting point. There is ample parking available at the starting points.

In contrast to traditional routes, the network of walking routes can be followed in both directions. Approaching from either direction, you will be guided from one intersection to the next by clear signposts displaying the numbers of the relevant intersections. This enables you to keep devising and discovering new routes for yourself.

Each starting point features an information board displaying a map of the local network so that you can adapt your route as you go along, if you wish.

The networks of walking routes in Sevenum, Roerdalen, Peel en Maas and Leudal are all signposted in the same way. An example of a signpost marking an intersection is shown on the right. Network of walking routes in Bergen

Although the network of marked walking routes in Bergen is signposted slightly differently from the others, this network is also based on a system of numbered intersections. An example of a signpost marking an intersection is shown on the right. These signposts indicate the distance to the next numbered intersection and each signpost also features a map of the direct vicinity.

Signposts displaying similar red signs indicate the route along the way.

Network of walking routes in Venray

Venray features a number of smaller networks of marked walks which can be found in and around the centres of Merselo, Vreedepeel, Oostrum, Smakt-Holthees, Geysteren, Oirlo, Leunen, Ysselsteijn and Castenray. The routes are signposted by aluminium signs displaying the numbers. See the example on the right.

Network of walking routes in Weert

While the municipality of Weert also features a network of walking routes, this network is based on coloured symbols instead of numbers. The network comprises several loops which are connected together. This network forms part of a larger regional network of routes in collaboration with Regionaal Landschap Kempen & Maasland and Grenspark Kempenbroek.
